How Do I Know If I’m Moving Forward?

Welcome to Part 8, the final article in Grief Questions Answered.
Over the past seven articles we’ve explored some of the biggest questions people ask after losing someone they love.
We’ve talked about whether healing is possible.
Why time alone isn’t enough.
Why you don’t have to feel ready before you begin.
Why small steps matter.
Why hope is still possible.
And why joy doesn’t mean you’ve stopped loving the person you’ve lost.
Today I want to answer one final question.
How do I know if I’m moving forward?
It’s an important question because healing rarely feels dramatic.
Most people expect healing to arrive with some great breakthrough.
They imagine waking up one morning and suddenly realising…
“I’m okay now.”
But that’s rarely how it happens.
Healing is usually much quieter than that.
It’s so gradual that you often don’t notice it while it’s happening.
Instead, you look back one day and realise you’ve come much further than you thought.
The challenge is that many people measure healing by the wrong things.
They think they’re healing if they stop crying.
If they no longer feel sad.
If they don’t miss the person they love anymore.
But those things aren’t reliable measures of healing.
You may still cry years from now.
You may still miss them every birthday.
A certain song may still bring tears to your eyes.
That doesn’t mean you’ve stopped healing.
It simply means you’ve loved deeply.
Real healing is found somewhere else.
It’s found in the small changes that quietly begin reshaping your life.
Perhaps you’ve accepted an invitation you would once have declined.
You’ve started sleeping a little better.
You’ve laughed without immediately feeling guilty.
You’ve found yourself making plans for the future again.
You’ve started talking about your loved one with gratitude instead of only pain.
You’ve discovered moments of peace where there once was only chaos.
Those things matter.
In fact, they may be some of the clearest signs that healing is taking place.
Think about a tree growing.
If you looked at it every single day, you probably wouldn’t notice much difference.
But come back six months later, and you’ll immediately see how much it’s changed.
Healing works the same way.
It’s slow.
It’s steady.
It’s often invisible while it’s happening.
But that doesn’t mean nothing is changing.
One of the biggest mistakes we make is comparing our journey with someone else’s.
Every loss is different.
Every relationship is different.
Every healing journey is different.
Some people move quickly in one area and slowly in another.
Some have more support.
Others carry additional burdens that few people see.
Your journey is yours.
There’s no timetable you have to keep.
No finish line you have to cross.
No scorecard measuring whether you’re grieving “correctly.”
The only question that really matters is this:
Am I taking another step today?
Because healing isn’t about perfection.
It’s about direction.
It’s about continuing to move, even when the pace feels slow.
When I created the 30-Day Healing Experience, I wasn’t trying to promise a quick fix.
I was creating a pathway.
A place where people could stop wondering what to do next and begin taking intentional steps forward.
One lesson.
One reflection.
One practical action each day.
Not because thirty days solves everything.
But because thirty days can create momentum.
And momentum changes lives.
As we finish this series, I want to leave you with one thought.
If you’ve read all eight articles, you’ve already taken a step.
You’ve chosen to learn.
You’ve chosen to reflect.
You’ve chosen to believe that healing is worth pursuing.
Don’t let that be where your journey ends.
Let it be where it truly begins.
If you’re ready to stop simply hoping things will get better and start taking intentional steps toward healing, I’d love to invite you to join the 30-Day Healing Experience.
Together, we’ll spend the next thirty days walking through practical lessons, honest conversations, and simple daily actions designed to help you move from surviving to living again.
You don’t have to have all the answers.
You don’t have to have everything together.
You just need to be willing to take the next step.
I’d be honoured to walk that journey with you.
Because healing is possible.
Hope is real.
And your story isn’t over.
Keep moving forward.
Thank You for Joining the Journey

Because no matter where you are today, I believe there’s still a path that leads from the valley to victory.
